Wayland Men’s Shed Update & Date of Next Meeting

Farmers, businesses, landowners – can you help with one of our key projects at the moment?….. the setting up of a Wayland Men’s Shed.

A Men’s Shed is a place where men feel at home and can pursue practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men of all ages where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work.

Having visited the brilliant Mens Shed Norwich yesterday I am on a mission! I have now seen first hand what can be achieved IMG_0362by volunteers, donations of tools and materials, not much money and a lot of passion. These ‘Shed’s’ really can change lives, from helping with mental health issues to providing a social place for men to come together, from getting people into employment to easing the transition from employment to retirement.

So, we already have the start of a great group with a lot of enthusiasm and ‘can-do’ spirit, support from key local agencies, the Partnership to act as the accountable body and apply for funding but what we don’t have is a building/premises.

We are looking for an unloved/unused building or piece of land in or around Watton that the Men’s Shed could use at no or reduced cost. The group would have the skills to refurbish and maintain a building so it doesn’t have to be pretty and it doesn’t have to be huge! Shed’s have been started from market stalls.

We are looking for empty premises such as agricultural buildings, industrial units, mobiles or even a spare bit of land that we could put a building on that could be used for the purpose of the Shed. If you think you could help with this please get in touch.

If you would be interested in attending the next meeting of the group to help get this much needed project off the ground we would love to see you on Wednesday 4th May, 10am the Hare & Barrel Hotel, Watton. All welcome!
